This particular painting was based off of a photograph taken during September 11th. He took the clouds of smoke that were depicted in the photo and displayed them in his painting. To ensure that many people were not overly affected by this particular painting, Tuymans took out all other aspects that were not smoke. The color schemes that Tuymans uses make particular paintings looks like they have aged over time. In Demolition, he mixed white with many of the colors to ad this effect of aging. Tuymans even says he makes his paintings “look old from the start…because they are about memory”. This painting specifically, has a lot of meaning to people who live in our area or were affected by the world trade center collapse. For many generations of people they can tell you their exact location and what they were doing when they found out about these attacks. These modern paintings are the ones that tend to stand out with us because they represent events that we lived through.
